A couple of friends are going to be in Cairo for 5 days next week and have no idea of where to go or what see while they are there. They want to stay in and around Cairo for the entire 5 days. What would you recommend for a 5 day trip for a couple of close friends who are totally new to all things relating to Egypt. Best regards Richard

Rodney Marsh has been sacked by Sky Sports. Marsh joked that David Beckham had turned down a move to Newcastle because he could not possibly go there after what the Toon Army did to Thailand. OK it is in poor taste but on a strictly football level it is quite funny. It shouldn't be a sackable offence, surely his public apology to anyone offended should be enough. For those who may not

QuoteThere are two ways of looking at the world – through faith and superstition or through the rigours of logic, observation and evidence – in other words, through reason. Reason and a respect for evidence are precious commodities, the source of human progress and our safeguard against fundamentalists and those who profit from obscuring the truth. There are phenomenon that cannot be easily expl

Hi wireless, You ask: 'Where do you think that the "paranoia" of being watched comes from?' There are many answers to this, each dependant on the watchee and the level of actual surveillance. Even if we are unaware of such, it is an inescapeable fact that most of us are 'watched' to some degree. Is awareness paranoia or just awareness, I guess it depends on the personality. Regard

I read somewhere of a belief of an indigenous people - I think in South America - or maybe North America - where they would perform a ceremony for the sun to ensure it would rise again and if they did not then the world would end. Or something like that my recollection is pretty sketchy! I tried to search for this but with no luck - does anyone know which people these are? Thanks Richard

This thread was prompted by reading this: Wildlife populations 'plummeting' Between a quarter and a third of the world's wildlife has been lost since 1970, according to data compiled by the Zoological Society of London. Populations of land-based species fell by 25%, marine by 28% and freshwater by 29%, it says. Humans are wiping out about 1% of all other species every year, and one of the &quo

Let's suppose that 'God' having been petitioned by the plant, animal and insect kingdoms has decided to call humanity to account over their stewardship of the Earth. 'God' has weighed all the evidence and decided to exterminate the human race. However before 'God' does this he has decided that each human will get the chance to come forward to make the case as to why humanity should be allowed t

Hi shamanaut, QuoteMeditative techniques using sound, sight, or awareness may generate particular wave patterns whose fields induce resonance in the brain. Millennia of human trial and error have determined that certain ‘sacred’ worlds, visual images, and mental exercises exert uniquely desired effects, causing multiple systems to vibrate and pulse at certain frequencies. When our minds and bod

Interesting article, what he has to say about maintenance makes a lot of sense to me. QuoteThen we have to talk about maintenance, which is far more important than corrective measures. This culture is based on fixing things, as opposed to maintaining them. But once we start to maintain instead of constantly fix, the problems that vex us will become much easier to solve. It will no longer be

Thanks all for the insights given above. The problem I am having is reconciling the cruel and genocidal 'God the Father' as portrayed in the Old Testament with the Jesus Christ of the New Testament Gospels as one and the same God. They seem to me to be incompatible as beings. Regards Richard

Hi Amy, So when christians speak of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit then they are really speaking about three aspects/incarnations of the 'One God' ? Regards Richard

25. One God
If there is only one God then why do the Christians have 'God the Father', 'God the Son', and 'God the Holy Spirit'? And if they are all aspects of the 'One God' does that mean that Jesus Christ as 'God the Son' and the God of the Old Testament as 'God the Father' are the same divinity? Regards Richard

A supreme being would need to be out of his, her, or its eternal mind to choose from all humankind the La Hayes, Falwells, Robertsons and their sycophants/marks, as those most meriting rescue. They would probably be ideal material for the supreme being depicted in the 'Old Testament' Regards Richard

An arch-conservative cardinal chosen by the Pope to deliver this year’s Lenten meditations to the Vatican hierarchy has caused consternation by giving warning of an Antichrist who is “a pacifist, ecologist and ecumenist”. Cardinal Giacomo Biffi, 78, who retired as Archbishop of Bologna three years ago, quoted Vladimir Solovyov (1853-1900), the Russian philosopher and mystic, as predicting that

"It would negate the communication because the person being communictaed to was intoxicated. When a person is on drugs, they can't accurately transmit what they hear. Have you ever heard a person on hallucinogens talking freely and coherently? I haven't and I've heard more than a few!" Surely that would depend to a large degree on the person taking the mushrooms and the set and setti

I do like your theory, it makes a lot of sense to me. Just because a person has a spiritual experience because he has taken mushrooms shouldn't invalidate said experience, maybe that is the way 'God' intended the communication. These mushrooms along with other hallucinogenic plants and fungi must have been created for a reason, especially if one subscribes to the 'God created all' point of vi

Having read through 150 or more contributions on this thread I'm a bit bemused. What's the difference if someone had a vision brought on by ingesting fly agaric mushrooms or had the vision by fasting for 40 days and 40 nights or had the vision as a result of a long study of meditation, or by wandering in the desert or as a reaction to severe hardship? A persons vision seems to be only notewo
