We don't know why the Maya disappeared

are you referring to the classical maya civilisation or the people themselves here Daniel
if its the former, the reasons that their civilisation collapsed are well known,

Non-ecological theories of Maya decline are divided into several subcategories, such as overpopulation, foreign invasion, peasant revolt, and the collapse of key trade routes. Ecological hypotheses include environmental disaster, epidemic disease, and climate change. There is evidence that the Maya population exceeded carrying capacity of the environment including exhaustion of agricultural potential and overhunting of megafauna.[13] Some scholars have recently theorized that an intense 200 year drought led to the collapse of Maya civilization.[14] The drought theory originated from research performed by physical scientists studying lake beds,[15] ancient pollen, and other data, not from the archaeological community

if its the latter, they havent dissapeared, there are still seven million of them inhabiting the same areas that they always did.

The Maya peoples constitute a diverse range of the Native American people of southern Mexico and northern Central America. The overarching term "Maya" is a convenient collective designation to include the peoples of the region who share some degree of cultural and linguistic heritage; however, the term embraces many distinct populations, societies, and ethnic groups, who each have their own particular traditions, cultures, and historical identity.

There are an estimated 7 million Maya living in this area at the start of the 21st century
