Lehner says, ' ... suggested by the existence of a corbelled niche, 4.7 m (15 ft 5 in) high, on the east wall of the chamber, which may once have held such a statue. A square pit at its base was deepened by early treasure-seekers.' (112)

Could the 'early treasure-seekers' have had something to do with its disappearance?
