Hi again “Me”,

I have to admit that I have toyed with attempting to introduce a new terminology to describe various aspects of the paranormal as a way to escape the “mumbo jumbo” (to use your phrase) that the current terminology carries for some people, but indeed terms currently used such as extrasensory perception and paranormal were originally introduced for the purpose of moving beyond the “mumbo jumbo.”

You mention Buddhism and shamanism. I tend to think that at least some of the traditions and phenomena associated with these and other religious or quasi-religious beliefs can be analyzed in terms of paranormal phenomena that are, or will be, ultimately explainable in a naturalistic framework. Indeed, this is not a new thought. Andrew Lang, in The Making of Religion (first published in 1898), explores such ideas, as does Serena Roney-Dougal in her piece included in The Parapsychology Revolution.

Best wishes,

RS
