I should really read the Secret History book first before I fully comment on it...

But my initial reaction is, these statements do not and cannot apply to our time. Yes, religion is no longer the dominant force it once was, but this is not the point of the original text that was quoted (and it's a stretch to say that it is). At any rate, it's a very gradual process that doesn't fit over just one generation.

Many times people read things like the Book of Revelation or any ancient prophecy, and imagine that they relate to the era of the reader. (This is true whether the reader lives in the 1500s or today).

A big one that Rapture-believers like to use when debating me is Peter 3:3: “You must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.” By attempting to debunk their idea that the world will end sometime in the very near future, I am fulfilling biblical prophecy (in their minds) by "denying the truth."

Only modern-day skeptics seem to fit the bill, of course.
