I think you're right. Intellectual dishonesty is endemic in the intellectual and scientific establishment. The system of tenure, the peer approval process, the intense competition for minute particles of funding all encourages this. Very few academics are taking intellectual risks of the type regularly taken on this website - it's more than their job is worth.
As i've observed elswhere on this site, is also to with the mania for being right! As that great occultist Samuel Taylor Coleridge was fond of recommending - and it's one of the main arguments in my book - we should refrain from trying to impose patterns too early - and wait for deeper patterns to emerge.
