Graham is speaking about the dichotomy between spirituality and materialism in present society, and how this trend was foretold by the ancient hermetic texts.

In ancient societies (not just Egypt) spirituality was an inherent part of society, and woven into every decision of everyday life to ensure morality (as opposed to legality.) Yet today we have the converse - it is legality that is woven into every facet of our actions as opposed to morality.

As Vaclav Havel said, 'While we have infinitely more knowledge about the workings of the universe than our ancestors did, it seems they knew something more essential about it, an understanding that eludes us. While our unread data gathers moss on hard drives, our relationships' slow rot betrays our trust in the fusillade of thought.'

Hope that made sense...

Deep
