"Most well versed literalists know very well what the issues are"
I find that most literalists are ignorant of ancient literature, philosophy and myth and therefore the detailed arguments.
Indeed they may say something like this:
"You do not find a counterfeit dollar bill by studying all of the counterfeits in circulation. You most efficiently find counterfeits by intimately knowing the object that is subject to counterfeit."
A good literalist can quote the Bible like its nobody's business, but cannot place Khafre, Plato or Seneca in a timeline of history.
Most have not even heard of Philo or read Homer.
