Definitely in agreement that there is much evidence around the world that suggests the rock shaping had a 'softening' influence. Another school of thought on the interpretation of those observable clues is that it points to the ancients having a sort of cement technology they are calling geopolymers.

But from my observations, if I were to believe any of the geopolymers theory, I still can't see any evidence that they ever were able to have a mixture that was ever more viscus than Plasticine, (for various reasons I won't get into here), so I'm not really on board. However, the leading edge of that investigation is doing some very interesting micro spectroscopy work and they are finding telling results about the elemental and chemical make up of the stone. These findings while enabling that geopolymer theory, are at the very least indicating that down to a molecular level, this work has been altered in some way unknown to modern processes.

Your claims of 'softened stone' are beginning to have substantiation in multidisciplinary approaches, much more so than just visual observation.
