the psi phenomenon comes from physics, actually psychophysics, and is closely related to the phi phenomenon and other well established phenomena, such as the vision constancies (color, size, brightness), illusions, stimulus specific after-images, and synesthesia.
As someone who switched from physics to psychophysics early in my career, the wonderment you have become aware of was part of my experience from the get-go.
