What is heartening to see is how so many individuals and movements are responding to the crisis. My work with "Ancient Spirit Rising" is about challenging the harm colonialism and capitalism has caused in the Americas - both to people and the natural world - and ties in with contemporary initiatives to form intentional communities, embrace alternative currencies, go localvore, spend more time on activities like community building and creativity than consumerism (shopping), and countless other shifts to sustainable living. We have to move away from a worldview of exploitation to one of reciprocity, and Indigenous Knowledge(s) from all over the world are an excellent source of hands-on practicalities and spiritual/cultural inspiration.
Adopting an Indigenous worldview means living lighter on the land, and building a society in which the ideal is to never consume more than can be replenished in a particular ecosystem, and not to expend more energy than what can be replaced by what is consumed. Beyond the toxicity of the industrial world modern man has created for himself, the "greenfuse" of life continues to manifest, and guiding forces are already in place for a return to eco-sanity. Even as we move into an unpredictable future, and the era of Empire ends after centuries of misdirection, our journey may come full circle in a surprising paradox, with our primal return, or re-indigenization, becoming the “future primitive” wave of the future.
