Hi Poster Boy! Most BIPOC activists, academics and freedom fighters working in social justice today are realistic in that the Settler Society isn't going anywhere - we all know this. And yet fulfilling the obligations of the original treaties by settling the land claims now before the courts, and supporting First Nations sovereignty on their own lands is something we can all support.

It is important to hear about these issues directly from BIPOC, and as Tslagi/Algonquin Elder Robert Lovelace says, “Indigenous peoples and Settlers have our own histories, where those histories have led us, and where the possible futures might lie for us together. Because guess what, we are here and now, we’re not going to change that fact, but what we can do is change the possible futures that we face.”[1]

A new idea for non-native people to wrap our heads around is that placing our trust in First Nations community instead of Empire, and giving them our support to restore the treaties in our shared territories might be a logical thing to do. As the engine of Empire continues to be fueled by oil, water, trees, and minerals extracted from beleaguered ecosystems, it may come to pass that the “only protection may be located in the small First Nation communities spread across the country, that still have the interests of the land in mind, and the legal power to govern those lands.” (Tara Williamson, Anishnaabe)[2]
