"In Māori mythology, Patupaiarehe are pale spirit beings that live in deep forests and on mountaintops in New Zealand, and are sometimes hostile to humans. Ethereal flute music and singing sometimes reveals their presence."
The earliest people in South East Asia looked like African pygmies. A common term for them is "Negritos". They are found in Burma, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Phlippines, and Australia. The "Negrito" people are called "Semang" in Malaysia, "Aetas" in the Phillipines, and "Barrineans" in Australia.
But the Negritos are not known to have reached New Zealand. They are hardly pale either.
The other alternative is Homo floresiensis (Flores Man or the Hobbit). [en.wikipedia.org]
Some people think that Flores man is the same as the "Orang Pendek" (lit. Short person) of Indonesian myth.
The term for "fairy" in the Malay language is "Orang Bunian"..
