The Rosicrucians arose during the late 16th, early 17th century across Western Europe. They carried some Neoplatonic and Hermetic ideas that had filtered into renaissance Italy via the Arabic world during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. So who knows what secrets night have been kept alive by them. What I do know is that they saw the appearance of a "stella nova" in Cygnus, the celestial swan, during the year 1600 as particularly significant to the coming age of enlightenment. The swan was the symbol of the inspiration of the Muses, which with it inspiration in the arts and sciences. It is for this reason that the swan and Cygnus in general became so important as a symbol of this coming new age.
