However, with the Adena mound people, I would have suspected the anthropologists William S. Webb, Charles Snow, and Dr Don Dragoo would have commented on an enlarged pituitary fossa, cavity, within the skulls of these very large individuals, along with other clinical features consistent with gigantism and acromegaly. pathologically exaggerated jaw, spaced teeth, etc, the features that Adena skulls simply do not show (they have massive jaws and pointed chins, but very large teeth, wide cheek bones and very round tall skull vaults). The extreme musculature evidenced in the thick strong muscle attachments on burials 40 and 54, (the 7 and 7.2 ft tall men at Dover and Cresap mounds 1952, 1958) I think tend to suggest constitutionally very tall people of massive from, not the long slender bones of pathological deformity, and weak muscle tone gigantism usually portends. Several of the men at the Cresap and Dover mounds exceeded 6 feet, and some women were also 6 foot tall.
I am going out on a limb here, but I would almost suggest the extreme stature and robust body builds are the outcome of a more paelo style, hunter gatherer physiology, subsiding off of high lean proteins, lack of anti-nutrients (few grains), and healthy seasonal variety and constant movement place to place. The teeth of many of these groups like Adena, and Archaics, had very low carries rate, up until the time of grain cultivation and agriculture of foods high in phytic acids were introduced. The late Dentist Weston A. Price, I believe still holds a credible case wherein excellently developed skulls, jaws, teeth and bone structure are found among groups who ate the traditional hunter gatherer foods, high in fat soluable vitamins, A,D,E,K,K2, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium. I think the tall skeletons Jason Jarrell and Sarah Farmer have documented, are the leaders, shaman, warriors and hunters of these societies who attained physically impressive bodies through natural processes of excellent nutrition, and arranged marriages through social selective processes. I wouldn't rule out some underlying pituitary giants among some examples in European armies, and perhaps some of the extremely tall skeletons found in other parts, but even today the majority of people up to about 7 feet, or 7 ft 2 or 3, are not the products of pituitary diseases (See the NBA, only several players on the roster ever had Gigantism, most were healthy genetics).
