It's not an inherited condition although there is a genetic link in related conditions like McCune Albright Syndrome and multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1.

And another thing. Gigantism and acromegaly aren't the same thing. Both are rare, but acromegaly is more common and would explain the relatively advanced ages of the people buried in the mounds. Even today, people with those conditions tend to die young. The mortality rate is roughly three times higher than the general population. People with gigantism would be lucky to make it to age 20. Robert Wadlow was 22 when he died, I think.

The population in the Americas would have been high enough to support a large number of people with these conditions.

1984 was a warning, not a how-to guide.
