From the article, regarding the Buddha's death on mushrooms:

"Considered allegorically, on the other hand, the story of the Buddha’s demise may not refer to an actual death at all, but rather to the so-called ego death (comparable to the Buddhist concept of Anata or No-Self) which is commonly reported by users of psilocybin"

I have often wondered this myself. It's fascinating when one considers the Buddha's subsequent reach or influence, and very responsible to say 'may refer to' rather than "refers to" in this discussion.
