In all fairness I should not limit this brain washing to schools, throughout my life every time when the last common ancestor was mentioned it was always described as a arboreal ape-like creature that moved around by quadrupedal locomotion. This is a description that is given in the press, on documentaries and seemingly commonly accepted by academics.
