Observation; even a caveman could do it.
Science is a puny tool for trying to understand nature and the devine but it truly is the only one in existence. One could argue that logic and philosophy are tools as well and I'd merely point out that these are incorporated within science (or science in them). Science might never answer any of the important questions and we might never understand more than a small piece of nature but it does generate wealth and technology creating ever more people to live in comfort while seeking God(s) and the answers.
Without science we're all subject to the major forces of nature such as starvation and without the devine we might not be here at all. Everyone should have at least some knowledge of science and everyone should know its metaphysics. If they did then we wouldn't have politics masquerading as science and a population that worships technology.
