Scientists are often forced to carry out rather mundane studies that tend to repeat what we already know--just adding on a detail or two at best. Physicists especially have become more and more speculative as empirical studies become more and more difficult, illusive, or, sometimes, impossible.
There is a great book called Blackfoot Physics (F. David Peat) that explores some of the very issues that you raise about quantum Physics. There are even scientists that call themselves "spiritual atheists."
yes, spirituality at least lurks in the mind of many scientists, and spirituality and science will remain compatible.
