I too read Communion when it first came out. I didn't scare mr, it changed me. Especially the part when he asks the visitors, what is the Earth and they replied school. It's school. The only book by Whitley that scared me was The Wolfen. That really scared me.
I recommend, Arthur C. Clarke's A Childhood's End. My favorite book.
