I taught my self basic French as I was performing relief teaching and the French teacher at the school had a breakdown and went awol. I sorted out the language cupboard and found great resources and would teach myself the following days lessons each evening. I had studied a year of Italian while at University and found them grammatically similar, but still had to develop an ear for French. I taught it for a term until they found a qualified French teacher and the principal said I was the best language teacher they had ever had, something of which I was very proud.
I also taught myself piano to the level where I could read and play moonlight sonata. I began teaching myself when I was about 7 but unfortunately never pursued music formally - definitely have underachieved in many ways.
Also taught myself to touch type when I was young. My mother brought home tax certificates to type up when I was about 10. She became bored, taught me which fingers to use and I finished her work. It has been useful in many types of employment from typing reports when teaching back to times I worked as a mainframe programmer.
