Hi Everyone!

If we mix a horse & donkey we get a mule that can not reproduce, though we have many and use them. In the fossil record other than maybe DNA how could we know if the species being studied was an actual species that could produce offspring? How many of the more scarce fossils are products of cross breading that could not reproduce seemingly providing evidence for evolution?
