The term ‘check’ is appropriate when the games of Chess and Ice Hockey are considered, and relates to stopping a player in their tracks for a moment when they need to be urged in another direction. Overall, a new strategy needs to occur or the game might be over for the one incurring a ‘check’, either through trapping themselves in a corner or suffering an injury that forces them off the field of play.

After finding little success in trying to curb the behaviour of certain members and their penchant for attacking, belittling, obfuscating or basically trying to disrupt the endeavours of others with displays of xenophobia, aggression, self-importance or bully-tactics…especially when they get around in small groups…it seems that another tactic is called for in minimising the potential harm caused by a troll when they descend upon a member, post or topic with other than sincere efforts to engage in intelligent conversation or debate.

As there is more leeway in how interactions can progress in this modern world of social interaction on the internet, it has been identified that discourses with a troll can descend into mimicking one where, despite any attempt to get one to be a turtle and pull their head in, a discourse can descend into rather murky waters of distraction from the mission of such a site as this: to offer a forum for intelligent discussion and debate on topics of interest. While a topic of interest might certainly be considered as extending one’s self to an area of satisfaction arrived at by humiliating a troll because of their behaviour towards one’s self or others, a further area of interest with a more pleasing sense of satisfaction can be found by implementing a short cut to silence. An example can be found below.

If you are the recipient of a trollish attack – for clarification, read The Rules listed on the Message Board home page and what constitutes unacceptable behaviour – instead of responding in any kind of way that will have no success (due to the mission of a troll at work), I recommend your reply to their post have a simple title that can be a meme:

A stone from a glass house.

As we are able to edit our posts, you may want to quote the offense in your reply so that there can be no mistake in why such a post-title has been made; otherwise the title itself will identify that you are replying to a post that is wholly trollish in nature, and is not worth responding to but certainly identifiable as an attempt to shanghai the progress of a topic or series of posts that trolls feel the need to descend upon. Folk might discern ‘tall poppy syndrome’ as a basis for a trollish attack; others may accept that trolls have issues they find no outlet for in their actual life, and under the cover of anonymity on websites, act in immature ways.

The intention is to have something that stands out below the offending post so that others are aware there is a troll at work in a topic or series of posts, and a ‘cease to interact’ descends upon the offender where their own posts, no matter the potential for enhancing a topic, are ignored by participants.

Such a simple title can be the easy way to ‘search’ for examples of trolls at work, and be a short cut to ignoring them whereby they either sharpen their image and behave in a more acceptable manor, or disappear from this site. Rather than imploring the Moderators for assistance in curbing the behaviour of a troll, our own efforts to moderate ourselves can take on a new level of identification that instantly has an effect: the post of a member is deemed unworthy of attention due to its lack of respect for The Rules and other members.

Please be cautious when using such a title though: there can be no doubt that it is appropriate. If someone disagrees with you in a short but strongly worded way, it is the nature of communication that needs to be understood rather than misinterpreted as trollish behaviour. If someone interjects in a topic with nothing but derision or a thinly veiled attack upon you, the title is worth using. Of course, for the post to be accepted by the site’s system, at least one character needs to be made in the post itself.

Happy posting, folks.
