I realize this has come up before, but I thought I'd bring it up again since it remains an issue regarding the usefulness of the various display options.
Is there any way, within a given post, to include a reference to the previous message # to which the current post is a reply? I'm envisioning a label at the bottom of each post consisting of something like: "in reply to post 1031055" where "1031055" is a link to that previous post that was replied to by either having clicked "Quote" or "Reply"?
There is so much utility in switching to the list format to review a thread, but sometimes it's difficult to follow the thread without being sure which post is being replied to. Adding that "in reply to" designation (even if it doesn't actually link back to that message number) would make the list views so much more useful and would reduce the errors people are still making in relating which post is actually being replied to.
This is a fairly common feature in blogs across the web and it's very useful for housekeeping purposes. While your "tree" display is quite useful in that display mode (many other web forums don't include that display map), the feature I described above would greatly enhance the utility of the other two "list" modes.
Please consider doing this if at all possible since there still are posts that continue to split tags and do not accurately represent the prior post that's being quoted. Having an easy way to jump back to the originally "quoted" or "replied to" post would add great clarity and continuity in the discussion.
Thank you for considering.
How can any of us ever know, when all we can do is think?
