Citing research sources can be a blessing and a curse. Research needs funding, so there is always the potential that the "research" is cooked, or is biased in some way as to validate the mission of the institution or other funding source. This makes Wikipedia an ideal platform to sell a flim flam product, bolstered by all those reasearch studies. See for example LED lighing in this section.
