Amusing how posters talk past each other. Yes, the Apollo missions did place retroreflectors on the moon. Yes, scientists even today use lasers to measure the distance between the lasers on earth and the retroreflectors on the moon. Yes the Saturn V did have the power to lift the Apollo command module and lunar lander to moon orbit. Yes BFR will be more powerful than the Saturn V.

Regarding the flimsiness of the lunar lander -- it needed to be ultra-lightweight. Foil (Kapton MLI and aluminum-mylar foil), thin sheet metal, about 40 pounds of paint, and tape work fine when landing on a body that has no atmosphere. But it had robust components as well - struts, batteries, tanks containing oxygen, water, and fuel, and the engines, etc.
