I have always been fascinated by the paranormal, and spent nights in places supposed to be 'haunted.' I have found nothing. Not a shred of a ghost, no apparitions, no casper-like figures, nothing!

However, I did have an experience a few years ago that I am finally willing to share. I was in the region of the famed (but now abandoned) Golconda mines, the same mine that produced gems like the Hope Diamond and the Kohinoor.

There is an abandoned palace there, once inhabited by the Nizam, a bit of a local warlord, really. There is a riverbed that it was built on the banks of, in the 15th century. That little sucker is said to be haunted, but not in a malevolent way. It is unoccupied because well, living people there simply see other people that are really not there.

I arrived there for a 4-night stay, by myself. The caretaker, a wizened old soul, was most hospitable. He smiled and nodded at everything I said. I immediately asked him about the 'haunted' reputation of the palace. He simply laughed. He said, "The people around here do not like tourists!"

I asked him where he slept, and lived. He said, "Here! I have my friends to keep me company!"

I was honestly a bit freaked out. It really was a little palace, with almost 100 rooms, marbled walls, beautiful but dry fountains, and a little orchard at the back that was more of a forest now, with trees like the Banyan and the Mango, that had enormous adventitious roots that clawed into the earth.

Anyway, Gama (the caretaker) cooked a supper from something. I asked him what it was, and he grinned a toothless smile, and said "bird." I did not ask any more. It was a pretty good meal. I had a hard time understanding his language, so I really don't know what he said...

The first night, I decided to stay up and read. Gama was most helpful in getting me a kerosene lamp for light. I read the 'French Lieutenant's Woman' almost all night, and fell asleep reading around 3:30 AM. I woke up hearing childrens' voices, but once I was really awake, there was no sound except bird cries outside the window. It was a dream...

The second night changed things. I was tired from being up almost all of the previous night, and was bored out of my mind. So again, I decided to read until I fell asleep, after another 'bird' dinner cooked by Gama. I dreamt. And I dreamt of walking through those marbled steps when they were pristine, and shone like mirrors. I was a commoner, yet honored by others for something I had done. There were perfumes that I could smell as I walked. There were hands clutching my mailed hands as I walked...

I woke up and told Gama about these dreams. He laughed, and said that maybe his friends had come to visit me (language problem, again...)

The third night was the real problem. I fell asleep reading again. I fell asleep around 4am. I fell into a deep, dark sleep, yet dreamt of women's voices. I remember their words, in languages I barely know. They were actually laughing and making fun of each other, and saying how the river water was too heavy...

I woke up completely convinced that I lived in a different time. I wore different clothes, I smelled different... I had no deodorant... I had to get a Neem stick to clean my teeth...

But the girls laughter had stirred me so much that I had to jump up to see them out of my window... I saw a riverbed that has been dry for hundreds of years.

I left that day. Gama laughed and and said that his friends "could not see my second colour." My aura? Perhaps? I don't know...

Deep
