The ‘dogon’ pattern is formed by every point in a disc which rotates once every time it spins around an orthogonal axis twice.
Each of the little balls in this Methane representation follows it around each of the two discs it shares. [users.accesscomm.ca]
There is only one pair of points that can rotate around all three axes, however, so only atoms with one or two electrons can do this:
