Happy Mother's Day to all mums on the MB.
Mothering Sunday? A day of relief during the penance of Lent. A day when the austerity of Lent was put aside to allow Catholics a moment of respite. A day when congregations would come together to celebrate Mass in the Mother Church. The Mother Church being the oldest (or largest) in the area. On this Sunday the Priest would celebrate mass in rose coloured vestments. One of only 3 days in the Catholic year in which the Priest can wear rose coloured vestments.
Strange I only learned this today. The (Latin?) name of the tradition is Laetare (spelling I don't know). Now of course the tradition is to allow a day of thanks to all our mothers for the sacrifices & love they gave us during life.
