Apparently, some people do need this kind of structure or else no one would subscribe. There's too many people looking for leadership, IMO.


Have you read "Foucault's Pendulum" by Umberto Eco? In the book, the main character starts an occult group as a joke, but others want to join the group and the original jokester becomes targeted by people who usurped control. In other words, people will buy anything, the more bizarre, the better. (That's a very poor synopsis of an excellent story.) Secret societies exist because people want to believe they're in on exclusive knowlege, whether or not it's real.

I've named several generations of my computers Abulafia after one of the characters in the book. Am typing this on Abulafia V.
