I have a vague recollection that Newton got his theory of gravity from an ancient source. Some Greek philosopher or something. And he was just the first one to write out a mathematical formula (the 'inverse square law') in a way that qualified as 'scientific' formulation. I thought it was some letters between Newton and Halley that had revealed this to historians. I wish I could remember where I read this now.
