There is another related lingual query that I've never found a satisfactory explanation for:

How and when was the "Atlantic Ocean" given its name.[ you get pretty close to it in this response of yours here[ Atalantes ], but many more of these approximations exust on either side of the ocean

Atlan, Aztlan etc on the Americas side; and Atalanta, Atarant, Atlas etc on the Africa/ Europe side.

Can you shed more light on this ?
