Though his name may not mean anything to most here, I was saddened to learn today of the death of a great musician. Malachi Favors Moghustut, for nearly forty years the Bassist with the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Less noted in the ensemble than the flamboyant late trumpeter Lester Bowie and the fierce reedsman Roscoe Mitchell, Malachi was credited with the distinctive face paint and African dress that they sported in performance to, as he said "blend in with the spirits in the music". His playing embodied such a physical aura that it could be identified after only a very few notes.
