I've finished your article and again I have to say that I find this very interesting and illuminating.
I'd like to present some other traits of depressive thinking that I find in the Genesis story of Adam and Eve.I'll quote from your article,if you don't mind?
"After Adam and Eve transgressed, they tried to shift the blame for their guilt."Four common traits found in depressive/negative dominated thinking are blaming, denial, rationalization and believing that one is a victim of unfairness. It is this later trait that I will call, victimization, that I would like to address.Victimization is the belief that ones actions and reactions are the product of some unfairness outside their control. Its a rationalization based upon the premise that since the problem was created outside of ones control then the answer must also come from this outside source.Examples today would be people blaming their parents for their transgressions in life.Children seem to forever try to place the blame on there parents instead of accepting/ acknowledging that they are in control of their actions and reactions not there parents. The children try to rationalize that they are victims of there parents flaws. This way of thinking, they believe, frees them from responsibility of their actions or reactions. In other words they believe that denying frees them from responsibility of their actions/reactions.That in actuality they are just victims of there parents bad parenting or flaws. The main problem of victimization is that when used it makes all mistakes appear that someone or something else is responsible. If an outside source is always responsible for our mistakes how can we learn or grow?Part of making mistakes is paying the price for a mistake. If we don't pay the price then we have no reason to try and not make the same mistake again. It is part of our learning process to understand/accept our mistakes.
"Adam accused Eve and she accused the serpent"Adam presented to God the rationalization that he was a victim of unfairness for his mistake.Eve gave him the fruit. He presented to God that he had no responsibility in this unfairness. That he was a victim of unfairness outside of his control.Eve gave him the fruit. He had no choice but to eat.Eve presented the same rationalization that the serpent was to blame and she was the victim. She to presented to God that she was a victim of unfairness outside of her control. The serpent told her to eat.He is to blame. She acts as if she had no choice.
"Adam and Eve didn't acknowledge that they had transgressed; They didn't repent, but in turn accused."They presented themselves to God as being the victims of unfairness.Instead of accepting responsibility for their transgression(mistake),which would allow them to live in truth and to learn and grow from this knowledge. They chose to live a life of lies by blaming, denying, rationalizing their actions/reactions and presenting themselves to God as victims of an unfairness outside of their control.
Is salvation, nirvana, enlightenment, etc. just other words for taking responsibility for our transgressions(mistakes) and accepting/searching for the truth in these transgressions.God is truth. He is not lies. Not accepting responsibility for our actions/reactions by blaming, denial, rationalization and believing one is a victim of unfairness outside their control is lieing.
God realized that not only were Adam and Eve trying to decieve him,but were decieving themselves.Which he knew was a much greater problem. It is us living inside this world of lies(decieving)that creates this world.
We all live inside our own creation. We can choose to live in a creation whereby we take responsibility for our thoughts,actions/reactions and live in truth or we can choose to live as victims of unfairness whereby our thoughts,actions/reactions are all outside of our control. Its our choice and always has been.I think this in part is what the Genesis story is about.Let me know what you think about this.
