So you read an ancient text translated through possibly 3/4 languages and got confused, sounds about right, especially the old testament. There are 300 versions (groups/sects) of the bible all seem to read it in a different way, this is because they have no really deep experience to base their judgement on. Book reading has helped the communication of material/physical knowledge of the world to great effect but spiritual books are only sign posts to an experience the writer had and the reader them selves must have to complete their quest for self knowledge. It is not peoples fault they intellectualised their search, we have been taught this method of reasoning since birth but it fails miserably in this regard. In the Gita, Arjuna is talked through 10 chapters of intellectual knowledge, most of it great stuff and really inspiring. Yet in chapter 11 Arjun says I still don't understand, so Krishna has to reveal his true/pure form, that of Light. This is the mystical first stage of true en 'LIGHT' enment. So in the same way until you have eaten a Kiwi fruit no amount of explanation can help you experience the taste of it. These kind of books are only sign posts to something you have within yourself, lost behind all the noise of mind, “Heaven is within” is this statement really that difficult to understand?
I don't like death either Tom, I have a most wonderful partner, we have been together for nearly 30 yrs now and we both know one of us will bury the other, a sad thing to envisage. I don't get to depressed if I think about it, I just try harder to enjoy every minute that I have with her. We are here only for a short vacation we have to return home some time.
Here's Chuang Tsu famous text from the Inner Chapters
“How can I tell if the love of life is not a delusion? How can I tell whether a man who fears death is not like a man who has left home and dreads returning? Lady Li was the daughter of a border guard of Ai, when the Duke of Chin first took her, she wept until her dress was soaked with tears but once she was living in the Dukes palace, sharing his bed and eating delicious food she wondered why she had ever cried. How can I tell if the dead are not amazed they ever clung to life?
Those who dream of a great feast may weep the next morning. Those who dream of weeping may enjoy the hunt the next day. While they dream they do not know they are dreaming, they may even interpret their dreams while they are dreaming. Only after they awake do they know it was a dream. By and by there will be a great awakening, and then we will know that this is all a great dream. All the while the fools think they are awake, appearing to understand things calling this man ruler and this man herdsman! How stupid! You and Confucius are both dreaming and when I say you are dreaming I am dreaming too.”
all the best Tom

“We learned a lot about the moon, but we really learned was about the earth, the fact that just from the distance of the moon you could hide the earth behind your thumb, everything you have ever known, your loved ones, your business, the problems of the earth itself all behind your thumb and how insignificant we all are but then how fortunate we all are to have this body and to be able to enjoy living here amongst the beauty of the earth itself, it truly is an oasis and we don’t take care of it. “ J.
