Can Science--empirical science--provide an explanation for your spiritual experiences?
Hi Ray, No, nothing explains it completely.

Or, can empirical science serve as a foundation for Religion--or any deeper understanding of the meaning of life for you?

If we look at natural human experience there is one science that has and does offer reasonable data to some difficult questions, Medical Science. It appears that when brain function is impaired like in the Stroke/ blood clot Dr J.B Taylor or an NDE, one is freed from the illusion the mind creates for us and so leaves exposed experience of our 'Ground of 'Being' This can be achieved in a far simpler way by focusing the mind and this quietens it down and after a lot of practice one can get very good at it. The 'experience' of the 'Ground of Being' does not limit us at all it is similar to having cleared out the cache of unused programs, temp files, cookies, etc from your computer it can run faster, etc. Its all good stuff.
But in recent years it has been noted that Cancer suffers stay healthier and fight the disease better if they are happy. Some people can be severely depressed by the diagnoses and so don't do so well in remission. Some doctors have set up treatment for these people, it involves Psilocybin. Now I don't like drug use, because of the addiction our mind can build for these things and it only takes a small amount of time every day practicing, to just focus the mind to stillness, so one can access it at will, not only when one takes a drug. but we have to practice it everyday.
Anyway here are 2 interviews with Cancer Patients who had been on the course about the experience and its effects on their lives and attitudes. It warms me to see that these poor people have found the ground of being and so be happy in there lives. Here are the links

"The whole world is a marketplace for Love,
For naught that is, from Love remains remote.
The Eternal Wisdom made all things in Love.
On Love they all depend, to Love all turn.
The earth, the heavens, the sun, the moon, the stars
The center of their orbit find in Love.
By Love are all bewildered, stupefied,
Intoxicated by the Wine of Love.

From each, Love demands a mystic silence.
What do all seek so earnestly?  "Tis Love.
Love is the subject of their inmost thoughts,
In Love no longer "Thou" and "I" exist,
For self has passed away in the Beloved.
Now will I draw aside the veil from Love,
And in the temple of mine inmost soul
Behold the Friend,  Incomparable Love.
He who would know the secret of both worlds
Will find that the secret of them both is Love." Farid ud Din Attar
