Can Science--empirical science--provide an explanation for your spiritual experiences? Or, can empirical science serve as a foundation for Religion--or any deeper understanding of the meaning of life for you?

Any scientist will answer those questions with a quick, "no." Empirical science can't provide a satisfactory explanation for spiritual experiences, because spiritual experiences cannot be studied directly at all with the most powerful scientific methods, and only indirectly with less powerful methods.

Even if empirical science could provide a glimpse of an explanation, it would serve as a very poor foundation for either a religion or an explanation of the meaning (or meaninglessness) of human life: the scientific answers are intermittently changing in unexpected way. See Kuhn:

What if we disregard empirical science, and revert to visions of science, expressed in philosophical terms?

There are three evidence-based theories of science that have offered the visions of experience that empirical science can't provide: Descartes mind-body dualism, Darwin's biological theory of evolution, and the big bang extension of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity.

Descartes mind-body dualism allows for psychic and physical forces influencing human behavior. It's most prominent in the modern study of consciousness:

Descartes (Sheldrake): [www.youtube.com]

Descartes (Chomsky): [www.youtube.com]

Darwin's biological theory of evolution has been the most over-extended into theory, almost becoming a materialistic theory of science, recently critiqued by Rupert Sheldrake:

Einstein's general theory of relativity has led to some really fascinating rethinking of quantum mechanics:

Do you accept these philosophy of science theories as a sufficient explanation for your own spiritual experiences?

Why or why not?

Ray
