In the United States--and the UK--we make a sharp distinction between art and science. At high schools and universities, the course of study is completely different. In German speaking countries, the word is wissenschaft for everything. Wissenschaft means to study. In the German sense, Joseph Conrad is a scientist--but not in the sense we have here in the United States.
The most important thing to me is that the scientific way--in this American sense--is a completely different way of thinking.
