Susan,

I agree that science has recently relied greatly on what you call "the scientific method"--the hypothetical-deductive approach for testing and improving scientific theories. One problem has been that using this approach for testing scientific theories has trapped us into proven anomalies of natural laws that we no longer understand. We've separated ourselves into theoretical and empirical scientists--and only the empirical scientists practice this hypothetical-deductive testing approach on a regular basis.

Theoretical physicists use alternative approaches to develop scientific theories for others to test. A good example was Dr. Richard Feynman, who spent much of his life trying to apply insights he found in art to new theories of science. He sat on the floor of his apartment, imagining ants navigating through his thick carpet, and tried to apply that type of thinking to quanta of information traveling though a wire. It's often referred to as "blue sky thinking."

For some time now, our blue sky thinking has not kept up with our ability to detect scientific anomalies we can't explain--like the mysteries of quantum mechanics. We're more and more uncovering empirical facts that don't make much sense. The established theory is clearly wrong--but we don't know how to fix it. A good example in quantum theory is particle/wave dualism.

That's what's been converting many experimental scientists into philosophers.

Ray
