There are a couple of posters elsewhere who consistently claim that scientists know nothing about consciousness. This is of course bunkum. Of course, as Ray says, there is much that is not known, but since we living humans are all conscious in one way or another, and dead humans are not conscious, there is one clear piece of very obvious knowledge - there must be a living creature for consciousness to be present.

It wouldn't matter if it had originally been named something entirely different, it would still be the same part of all creatures and plants to some extent,

To treat it as some sort of impossible *thing* which has a life of its own is of no use whatsoever.

I do not know if the OP did this, as it was too long for me.
