And don't you think he'd (Sir Fred Hoyle) have updated his knowledge base if he were still alive today? If he did not do that, he would find himself on the fringes of evolutionary biological understanding, not in the centre of things.

Fred Hoyle was ‘the best of the best’. He diverged from the belief that life got started here on earth (the theory of abiogenesis) when he claimed to have discovered bacteria in space dust. From Wikipedia: [en.wikipedia.org]

In 1982 Hoyle presented Evolution from Space for the Royal Institution's Omni Lecture. After considering what he thought of as a very remote possibility of Earth-based abiogenesis he concluded:

If one proceeds directly and straightforwardly in this matter, without being deflected by a fear of incurring the wrath of scientific opinion, one arrives at the conclusion that biomaterials with their amazing measure of order must be the outcome of intelligent design. No other possibility I have been able to think of...

Continuing from Wikipedia:
Published in his 1982/1984 books Evolution from Space (co-authored with Chandra Wickramasinghe), Hoyle calculated that the chance of obtaining the required set of enzymes for even the simplest living cell without panspermia was one in 1040,000 (10 followed by 40,000 zeros). Since the number of atoms in the known universe is infinitesimally tiny by comparison 1080 (10 followed by 80 zeros), he argued that Earth as life's place of origin could be ruled out. He claimed:

The notion that not only the biopolymer but the operating program of a living cell could be arrived at by chance in a primordial organic soup here on the Earth is evidently nonsense of a high order.

Hoyle’s collaboration with Chandra Wickramasinghe continued until his death in August 2001. Chandra Wickramasinghe has carried on their work on the panspermia model such that he has set up the Center for Astrobiology in Sri Lanka, University of Ruhuna. Quoting from one of their recent papers: [physics.ruh.ac.lk]

More intriguing is the discovery of bacteria and microbes in unlikely places, such as the stratosphere, 30 to 40 kilometres above the surface of the planet, and more excitingly on the outside of the International Space Station. In the case of the ISS, contamination has been ruled out and the physics suggests that it is not possible for the microbes to have been lofted up from the earth’s surface.
Just as fascinating are suggestive astronomical findings, such as the Rosetta mission’s discovery of organic compounds on and around the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. This finding coincides nicely with Hoyle and Wickramasinghe’s demonstration that interstellar dust is partly made of organic molecules.

There have also been recent discoveries of habitable exoplanets that support the claim for life from space. Quoting from the paper; Progress in Biophysics and Molecular Biology - Cause of Cambrian Explosion - Terrestrial or Cosmic? See [doi.org]

Perhaps the most important astronomical data relevant to the theory of cosmic life to emerge in the past decade are the detections of habitable exoplanets - planets outside of our solar system. The total estimated tally of such Earth-like planets in our Milky Way galaxy alone now stands at 100 billion, and with 100 billion or so galaxies in the observable universe the grand total stands at 1022 (10 followed by 22 zeros). Because exchanges of possibly fecund material between neigh¬bouring habitats is more than likely, panspermia and the theory of cosmic life could be argued to become inevitable facts.

So it is possible, if Fred Hoyle was still around, he may be swept away with the flippant uttering of Susan Doris in this forum. But I tend to think he would have stuck with the panspermia model.
