Apolania was quaint and hospitable by any standard of hospitality. However, the Captain caused a strife with the port authorities. They wanted to tax the goods at the ship's expense, especially the Captain's personal profit from the metalwork.
This was most likely, as I was listening to the arguments between the Captain and the authorities, about a ruse from the competitors to take profit for the taxation of the goods. How they did this is what our Captain was describing to the authorities.
They wouldn't budge their demands. The Captain was like a screaming child about this new policy being a sham by his competition, that they would gain something for nothing. After all, any tax is for SOMEONE AND SOMETHING to get the personal enrichment from someone else's efforts.
There I was, witnessing this travesty of misuse of power over hard working souls and their livelihood. Even though my personal wares were not on this ship, I felt the anger and remorse for trusting those people who sabotaged our mix of metalwares for this excuse of authority that we now are facing.
I walked away and was brooding on how I was going to back track to my home, where Juna was waiting for me to return. In that split moment, where all things combine to establish a pattern that excises the faults of life and men in their pursuits, I realized that I was involving myself in a situation that I had no business to engage myself. It was the fate of the ship, Preaus, not mine.
As I walked to the obvious drinking hole, I glanced over onto the right of me, and saw a figure moving in the shadows; it seemed like following me. I was curious and changed my course from getting a drink to absconding the shadowy figure.
"Who are you?!!! And why are you following me? I saw you coming from the port. Go on!! Tell me now!!!"
"Excuse me sir!! I was just noticing your clothing. Nothing to be afraid of. I just wanted to be sure that you were the Smithy's nephew. Are you not?"
I was taken aback!! I did not know who this was. So, I asked him," What do you know of the Smithy?"
He said, "I only know that you are my superior and I was commissioned to guard you here in this port town".
"Yes, I have a mission to protect you from lesser men who have just now absconded with your Captain's profits. Very nasty business, that."
"I still don't know WHY you are here? Am I going to have to feed you and pay you? I did not get my share of the ship's cargo, mind you!! I am without much coinage or any precious items."
"No, sir. I have not only been paid well but I have enough for both of us. Do not fear, there is lodging down that street. Come!!"
I was truly shaken. Who would assign a guardian for me; especially from my hometown? So we went to the inn for room and food.
The virtue of a highly evolved being embraces all people and things and dispels the darkness which isolates them.
