Sam and I were in a bit of trouble. We had ventured to the nearby town by car. However, we had no ride back to Serres, in the French alps in the east. We both knew how to thumb a ride, but fate would have us walk about 17 kilometres, or so. We were both fresh for the start of the journey. We kept on, occupying our minds to thinking about what was important to each of us. I was thinking about the length of the walk. You, see, I used to love to walk. I kept my mind on the pace of my legs. That kept me going.

It was a long time, an hour or two or more. I was glad for the challenge. I generally stayed ahead of Sam, he was not as tall as I was, so he worked harder to keep up.

As we got closer to Serres, I felt my last surge of energy to complete the mission. I was thinking about the parrot that the lady owned at the place we were going to. I had not been around a parrot before. And, of course, I was pushing it to get back. Hunger and weariness were taking their toll.

When we got back my mind shut down from the effort to get back to Serres. I was satisfied that both Sam and I achieved our mission.

The treat after our trek was when we were going to stay at the cabin in the hills near Serres. Sam, his older brother and I gladly went into the outdoors. After we settled in, Sam and I explored the country in the proximity by the cabin. We both saw "elephant head" rock. It was cool.

Later, by days, a girl was wandering around the fields by the cabin. Sam's older brother wanted to walk and talk with the girl. I went along just to get out and about. Sam's brother spoke French, whereas, I only learned Spanish in school.

That time we were there allowed us to obtain some homemade wine from a local Frenchman. Oh yes, we were happy!!

Sam and I went to Barcelona, Spain to visit a carnival there. We had to take a tram, on the wires that carried the "car" up the hill to the carnival. When we were done there, we got into a car going back down. I know there was a drunk man in the car. I believe that Sam and I had also been drinking, but that is uncertain.

From Serres I traveled by train to Paris, where I met up with my sister and her college friend to explore Germany, Denmark, Holland and the two countries of England and Scotland.

It was the summer before my 17th birthday and the Americans invaded Europe, that summer of 1971.

Just for respect of Louis Armstrong, the trumpeter, I saw amazing signs out in Denmark on every street honoring the musician for his life's accomplishments. They loved his music in Europe.

Here's what Sam brought to Europe for musical entertainment:

Trains, Youth Hostels and Travellers checks were our staples in Europe that summer: Here is what the Youth Hostel in Amsterdam, Holland played to wake up the crowd in the morning;

The Youth Hostels were making money on the crowds of Americans that summer. There were about 100 people in the Amsterdam Hostel that one day. Think how much people were traveling that summer, mostly Americans. It was phenomenal, to say the least.

Many of them, that morning, were sleeping on the floor, like me, that night. My sister was probably in a bunk bed that evening. I remember sleeping outside at another hostel; there was no room for me.

It was a blast!!

PS. The hostels did feed us a nominal breakfast, thank goodness. It is a lot of work to walk around town to explore things.
