Susan, this is one of those points where your secular beliefs literally force you to deny such a possibility, that any such 'authority' exists. Often, the next step in that process is a semantic one, asking the believer to come up with some hard and fast definition of what sin is, as you do here.
This is an unfair onus, Susan, unless you or a single one of your secular colleagues can provide a hard and fast definition of things that we all agree exist, like happiness or sadness. Care to define exactly what either of those terms mean? I don't think that you or anyone here can do that. So, why ask others such impossible questions?
