Carol, here is a book for you: "To Think like a God" by Arnold Hermann. This book compares and contrasts what we know of the thinking and lives of Pythagoras and Parmenides (which actually is not a whole lot.)

Pythagoras seems more of a religious thinker who used mathematical mysticism as the basis of his cult. Greek science followed the path laid down by Parmenides, rather than that of Pythagoras, which attempts to be the logical explication of observable reality.
