Its difficult to tell from that article whether its just some ignorant reporter being surprised that people in the past where just as intelligent as us, or an actual account of the use of Pythagras's theory.

As such I'm skeptical. "Show me the money". Until then Pythagoras is still walking on the shoulders of giants, but his contribution is seminal.
