Our nuclear weapons aren't designed for space travel--are we talking about sending an ICBM or a nuclear device piggybacked to a rocket? Also, the ones we really need to worry about (400m or larger) wouldn't be obliterated and then, to borrow a phrase, you risk turning one falling object into many. We would be better off letting it hit the Earth intact rather than having tens or hundreds of smaller ones impacting all over the place. They might be able to deflect it, but they would need to know quite a bit about the composition of the asteroid before they could even think about doing it.

Not only that, but depending on how close the detonation was to Earth, we're talking about a substantial EMP and enough energy to knock out a lot of satellites. The radiation interacting with the atmosphere would also wreak havoc with radiocarbon dating for a very long time.

They actually tried to detonate a nuke in space in 1962. It was called Starfish Prime and has never been done since.

In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like earth. ~ Margaret Atwood
