What do you suppose is going on? A different article based on NASA data (using a different data set) may be found NASA space data supports citizens' observations: Meteor fireballs are increasing dramatically. Chart shows different numbers per year than the above data set, but shows the same trend.



Now what I find interesting is how hard it is to find reports on the web. You might think there would be lots of discussion about this situation but - nope. There are a few fringe sites but overall the articles are sparse. There are various articles talking about numbers, and dismissing the numbers because the vast majority of meteors are quite small. What is difficult to find is reporting on the increase of reports. But as you can see from the above data, that rate is increasing significantly.

My guess is this. The sun drags the entire solar system through space. We may be entering an extra-solar debris field with a higher amount of random gravel. A decent video showing this perspective may be found here.
