The other day I found a story and photos explaining why the Russians never made it to the moon, OMG, I have never seen such a cluster "F". The main problem was they couldn't develop a rocket engine like our Saturn V booster because they didn't have the technology for liquid fuel engines. They relied on engines that mixed chemical oxidizers and chemical propellants which turned out to be very complicated systems that were very prone to failures. The booster they finally built was as big as the Saturn V. 12 boosters were built, 10 for testing 2 for actual missions to the moon. The boosters were designed with 33 engines around the outside and 6 engines in the center of the booster. #1 booster blew up in fine fashion. #2 blew to the tune of a nuclear bomb totally destroying the entire test area, but with resolve they rebuilt the facility and two years later booster #3 and booster #4 blew up in fine fashion as well. The Russians never tried again.
